A witness forgotten... (A work in progress.)

Sorry that it took me so long to get to writing this, but now I finally have a few moments to spare. As taken from http://www.kofc.org/eb/en/publications/columbia/detail/458998.html :"Around the year 1600, three boys were sent to gather salt needed to preserve the meat of the town’s slaughterhouse, which supplied food for the workers and inhabitants at the Spanish copper mines near Santiago, Cuba. Two of the boys…See More

Ethnography

I thought I would post an ethnography I wrote up some time ago related to some of my observations at a TLM I assist at. As noted throughout the study, quite a few of the going ons related to place making in a shared public space are crucial in establishing a sub "hierarchy". This underlying "hierarchy" is responsible in setting the general tone for what is in keeping with the "rubrics" of "traditionalism". But as we will see this stifled romanticized view of "traditionalism" is in SOME cases…See More

That sounds rather depressing, but then at the same time I wonder what exactly do people expect to find when they walk into a club like that ? I mean I can cite my own observations from personal experience. Sometimes when observing another culture…

Native American Culture House

I stopped by the university Native American Culture House today. It was rather disappointing. It was run by white people (as we're averaging only 1 Native American graduate per year here, apparently) and just had a few brochures on tribal colleges and then all this generic stuff about local health services and clubs on campus that you can find in any building, it had nothing to do with Native Americans in particular. There was some art displayed, but not even that much. It was all very…See More

Masterpieces of Oral and Intanglible Heritage of Humanity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masterpieces_of_the_Oral_and_Intangible_Heritage_of_HumanityI didn't know this existed. It is apparently the "intangible" equivalent of World Heritage Sites. I hope these things can be as successfully preserved...See More

Mark K replied to Mark K's discussion 'Avatar'
I doubt that will affect viewership much. Most Catholics, even good Catholics, aren't aware of the USCCB's ratings or Vatican reviews of movies, even if we're vaguely aware it happens. And we certainly don't care enough to let…

Saw this film today, the most expensive ever made apparently, and with amazing animation technology.Have you see it? It raises issues regarding Native rights (though in a way that, perhaps somewhat stereotypically, associates them with an Ecological Mother-Earth-Goddess type of message).I'd recommend seeing it, as it made me very angry indeed at Exploitation (there was a thinly veiled allegory involving the US and resources, methinks), even if it was rather preachy.See More
